Peleng (Reference Sire)Liver chestnut, 1978-May 2002Peleng was one of the best sons of the epoch-making Nabeg. Along with his half-brothers Menes and Pesniar, that breathtakingly beautiful and athletic animal belonged to the world's breeding elite. The fantastic all-rounder was an epitome of Russian breeding. Peleng was one of the most stunning stallions ever to leave Russia. Peleng was born in 1978 at Tersk. His dam was Salon daughter Palmira, an outstanding broodmare, who until she died in 1990 produced 7 fillies and 5 colts, the premier among them all being Peleng. After a successful racing career Peleng became a sire at Tersk. But his breeding career in Russia was fairly short. He did, however, leave very good racing horses behind in Russia, above all mares. In July 1985 at Tersk, after a regular auction there, quite unexpectedly arrived a US team looking for a Russian star sire. When they were shown all the Tersk sires, the Americans shortlisted them to Mukomol and Peleng. Sasha Poromarev was reluctant to part with Peleng and it took an intervention of top brass from Moscow to swing the deal. Peleng was taken to Vyborg, a place round the corner from Finland. There, Peleng was put on a trailer and set out on a journey of around three-thousand kilometers through the waterless Kalmykian steppe, Volgograd to Moscow and then to the Finnish border. For the first few years outside of Russia Peleng stayed in Holland, where he was to be prepared for export to the USA. The foals he sired in the meantime were of exceptional quality and won many classes at shows. Once again there seemed to be confirmation of what was already known of other Nabeg sons - immeasurable breeding potential. Peleng could not stay in the States because of piroplasmosis. He found a new owner in Europe: Paolo Gucci in England. In Europe Peleng continued his successful breeding career. Peleng was National Champion Holland 1988 and 1989. His sire Nabeg has made an impression all over the world with his sons Nariadni (USA), Neman (Germany), Menes (USA, Holland, Belgium) and Peleng (Holland, England) and Norway. Peleng had beautiful big eyes, a dry nice head, very good legs and a good body. He was the sire of many good horses; one of the best known stallions is Gomel which is a breeding stallion at the Kossack Stud in Holland. Gomel is also a dressage horse competing up to Prix St.Georges level. "Peleng lived his life in Norway out in the field with his mares. It was a life made in heaven for a beautiful and noble stallion. He treated the mares and the foals with respect and playfulness. He was a happy horse and in the end when the sad day came, he passed away in his own summerfield with his broodmares around him. He did not suffer, but his heart just stopped, and while we were so sad to lose this wonderful stallion we were also happy that the end came fast, without pain and that he left his life like the king he always was and will be in our hearts." - Rhine Arabian Stud
